Lenny Pickett at the Crusell Music Festival

I’ve had my doze of jazzy woodwind music today 🙂 Lenny Pickett, one of the founding members of the band Tower of Power and the musical director of the TV show “Saturday Night Live“, was here at my tiny little town of Uusikaupunki and played some great music with top-quality Finnish musicians (saxophonists Jouni Järvelä and Pertti Päivinen, who both are members of the Finnish UMO Jazz Orchestra, and the drummer Jonatan Sarikoski (whom I really like!))

I really loved the concert! I can’t really tell anything about the individual pieces, because there was no program leaflet given for the audience and the musicians didn’t really tell the names of all the songs, but it doesn’t matter! It was an enjoyable evening and definitely worth of money!
I also learned something new there – I really didn’t think that a clarinet can produce such synth-like sounds that I saw Mr Pickett do with his clarinet! That was just amazing…
One piece made me think about the classical composer Sergei Prokofiev… there was something Prokofiev-like in the music, like the rhythm, harsh harmonies and “ugly” melodies nad motifs over there…

Which leads me to the fact that Russians invented jazz before Americans. Really. Listen to for example Alexander Scriabin‘s 4th piano sonata that was composed in 1903, and you’ll get what I mean…

Anyhow, the concert tonight (or should I say yesterday, because it’s past midnight now?) was great, as I said before… I saw some great and solid musicianship, great moods, great virtuosity and great interpretation and feel of groove. Great!!!

Thank you, Lenny Pickett and the rest of tonight’s vand! Here’s at least one happy audience member…
