Cello and kantele concert

Was at a very beautiful concert just recently… in the old Lutheran church of Uusikaupunki (which was built in 1623 and is a very beautiful church)…

We had a chance to listen to some beautiful music, performed by the cellist Seeli Toivio and the kantele player Hedi Viisma … They’re a beautiful and good-sounding duo! I liked them so much that I bought the both CD’s they had to sell…

I especially liked Mrs. Toivio’s virtuoso playing and the intimate and rich sound that came out from her cello. She really showed her skills with Popper’s “Elfentanz” 🙂 And Mrs. Viisma was also excellent with her instrument… especially in her solo pieces. I especially liked their interpretations of the two pieces of Arvo Pärt they had in their program (“Spiegel im Spiegel” and the solo kantele piece “Für Alina”)… So full of intimate feelings and beautiful moods…

This was also the first time I heard Baroque and Classical music accompanied by kantele and I must say that it fit’s really well in that style of music (at least based on the works of Vivaldi, Frescobaldi and Boccherini we heard today). It’s a beautiful instrument that should be heard more in concert venues, festivals and churches around the world!
