Concert on last Friday at the Turku Cathedral…

Attended a concert at the magnificent medieval Turku Cathedral, the oldest church in Finland… it was actually the opening ceremony for the 200th anniversary of the Finnish Bible Society, so there were also some speeches by e.g. the Archbishop of the Finnish Lutheran Church, the mayor of the city of Turku, the head secretary of the Bible Society etc. etc…

The concert was magnificent! Below you can see the program… The legendary Finnish organist Kalevi Kiviniemi played the organ… and he’s definitely worth of his reputation 🙂 … Franck’s "Piece Heroique", which opened the whole ceremony, was stunning!

The other musicians were great too, although the violinist (Mervi Myllyoja) had some problems with the tuning, but anyway… They were great! I liked the Nocturne of Sibelius, it’s a stunning piece too… all those subtle colors and moods…

Dvorak’s Biblical songs were great too…  sang by Jukka Pietilä…

The last piece was not Boellman’s toccata, although the program leaflet says so… it was Bach’s famous Toccata in D minor…

But yeah, it was a nice concert! The best thing of all: it was free! (Although I had to pay 13,30€ for getting there by bus…) If you ever have a chance to listen to Kiviniemi’s skills at the organ, please don’t miss the chance!

As for the Finnish Bible Society… they’re doing an important work! 200 years ago it was their work that brought God’s Word to ordinary Finnish homes!
