Crusell Music Festival

Wow… what a week I had! The annual Crusell Music Festival was held here in Uusikaupunki, and this year there was also an international bassoon competition. I attended a few concerts and the semifinal and final rounds of the competition. What a great festival of woodwind music! Many high-level musicians from Finland and abroad attended the festival and master courses.

To be honest, I had never before heard the bassoon used as a solo instrument (shame on me, really…) but while listening to the competition I got at least an idea what the instrument is capable of. (The competiton was won by Theo Plath from Germany – not a surprise since he played so beautifully).

And the final concert which was held yesterday… another big WOW! The concert was held by the Finnish soprano Helena Juntunen and the Virtuosi di Kuhmo orchestra – conducted by the legendary Osmo Vänskä! They played Nino Rota’s concerto for strings, a pair of Mozart arias and… last but not least… Richard Strauss’ stunning Metamorphoses for 23 solo strings (which I fell immediately in love with)… The concert experience was simply stunning, they played so amazingly well…

    • Oh yes, I could. Sophie Dartigalongue, Lola Descours and Theo Plath all played Crusell’s Concertino in Bb Major and Willson Osborne’s Rhapsody as their program. Nana Ozaki played the Concertino and after that Vincent Persichetti’s Parable IV.
